These baskets have a hidden frame hand-welded from steel. Each basket is then woven with cords that have been made from torn fabric ("chindi") made from authentic Indian saris.

The baskets are made through a project that empowers women and teaches them new trades (like welding and small business practices) in India. These baskets use discarded fabrics from the Indian textile industry. By reusing discarded fabric remnants, the project helps reduce, reuse, and recycle while keeping the price of the raw materials inexpensive. That is why these works of art are so reasonably priced.

We absolutely love the colors, the texture, and usefulness of these unique baskets. The unique mix of sari patterns used yields distinct baskets, despite similar shapes and designs.

Featured in the photo gallery with several other bowls from this collection. You can find all by searching "sari" or "chindi" in our online store.

In India, the most common meaning for chindi is ‘torn cloth’; encountered either as a waste byproduct in the textile industry (post-industrial) or, more commonly, as the end-of-life residue of fabrics in use in households (post-consumer). For generations, this form of textile waste, torn strips of cloth, has been repurposed as colorful twine for tapestry or home products. The chindi used in our colorful baskets and bowls is from upcycled Sari fabric.
